The following pages pertain to the Prius Gen 2 models (MY2004 to MY2009).
The second generation Prius marked a major change from the previous generation. The gasoline engine became more powerful, interior room was increased, it was now a hatchback design and adopted the exterior shape that became synonymous with hybrid gas-electric vehicles.
Other improvements included an electrically driven AC compressor and smart key system.
Production surpassed 50,000 units/year, and for most of the second generation's run in the United States, there was a waiting list at most dealerships. It was listed in the top 10 "hottest" cars (determined by number of days on the dealers lot) for several years.
The cars were built at the Tsutsumi plant and Fujimatsu (Toyota Auto Body) plants in Japan.
